Let’s get this straight: cockroaches are creepy. Among the most despised of pests, cockroaches are unsightly, dirty, and worst of all, hard to detect. Sure, we might run into one in the middle of the night trying to get a midnight snack, but for the most part, you don’t often run into cockroaches. Since they’re naturally nocturnal, unless you’ve got a serious infestation, you’re not going to see them if it’s broad daylight.
Despite their sneakiness, the signs of a cockroach infestation are a lot more obvious than you might realize. By identifying the presence of cockroaches, you can take the action necessary to get rid of them once and for all!
The Roach Nextdoor
Whether you live in an apartment, a condo, or a house, whatever happens to our neighbors typically happens to us. Roaches rapidly multiply and are rarely isolated in one area. If your neighbors are struggling to keep their roach problem under control, unfortunately, it’s very likely going to become your problem as well. To stave off the spread of neighborly roaches, you can take preventative measures like keeping your home clean of crumbs or food droppings, in addition to regularly emptying trash cans.
Eggs Everywhere
Roaches lay eggs. Lots of them. However, the eggs themselves are contained inside of a little casing that typically appears dark brown and is about the size of a dime. Depending on the species, the exact appearance of the egg casing will vary. You can expect to see them inside cabinets, in dark, damp areas, or underneath your kitchen appliances. A single casing can house upwards of 50 eggs. Often, just because you see a casing, that doesn’t mean it’s full of eggs. When the eggs hatch, the casing itself remains. Either way, if you spot a casing, there’s a good chance you’ve got roaches—lots of them.
Roaches in Plain Sight
Perhaps the most obvious sign of all: you can see roaches out in the open. As we touched on earlier, roaches are primarily nocturnal. Sure, it’s not unusual to see one when you turn the kitchen lights on in the wee hours of the night, but if you can see them out and about bright and early, you’ve got problems. Roaches typically only go out in the open during the day when there are overcrowding issues.
If you continually see roaches out in the open or notice any of the other above signs, it’s time to do something about your roach problem.
